DIY Backyard Wild Bird Feeder: Simple Guide to Attract Birds

I love this quick, easy project — it makes a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys watching birds at the feeder.

Bird Log feeder

Start with a roundish log or thick branch — a cherry branch works well. Using a large drill bit, bore several deep holes into the log to create pockets for the seed mix. A paddle bit around 32 mm works nicely, but use the largest bit you have available. Drill a smaller hole at the top so you can thread cord through and hang the finished feeder.

Bird Feeder Mix

For the filling, mix a packet of lard with a good scoop of wild bird seed. You can also add surplus grains such as an out-of-date muesli — birds won’t mind. Work the lard and seed together by hand or in a blender until well combined, then press the mixture firmly into each drilled hole.

Thread string, ribbon, or raffia through the top hole and secure it so the log can be hung from a tree branch or hook in your garden. If you plan to give the feeder as a present, freeze it for an hour first to firm up the lard, then wrap it in cling film or cellophane for presentation and hygiene.
