Involving kids in food prep is valuable: they learn where food comes from, practice fine motor skills, and build confidence. Even very young children can help with simple tasks like pouring, stirring, or pressing ingredients into a pan with supervision.

My son has always been curious about the kitchen and enjoys pretend cooking as much as real cooking. At daycare and preschool his favorite play areas are the toy kitchen and the trucks — and at home he’s careful not to make too big a mess, which makes cooking together much easier.

Here’s everything we’re working with: M&Ms, rolled oats, puffed rice cereal, and chopped pretzels. Keep the ingredients on the table and try to avoid losing too many to the floor!

There are limits to what I’ll attempt while a toddler is helping, so simple recipes win every time. No-bake recipes are ideal: minimal hot equipment, quick results, and usually a lot of kid-friendly steps.

This particular recipe combines M&Ms, pretzels, and peanut butter for an easy, crowd-pleasing snack. It’s also a great chance to teach measuring, mixing, and pressing the mixture into the pan.

Because it was close to Valentine’s Day when we made these, my mom sent a bag of red, pink, and white M&Ms and we made the bars festive. Of course, you can use classic multi-colored M&Ms or pick colors for any holiday or team: green and white for St. Patrick’s Day, red and green for Christmas, black and orange for Halloween, and so on.

No-bake M&M pretzel granola bars are a delicious, simple snack, endlessly adaptable, and a great way to involve young kids in the kitchen!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (198 grams) old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup (28 grams) puffed rice cereal
  • 1/2 cup (20 grams) pretzels, chopped
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) M&Ms, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1-2 tablespoons flax seeds (optional)
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons, 57 grams) butter
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup (68 grams) peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup (53 grams) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Line an 8×8 or 9×9-inch pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the oats, rice cereal, chopped pretzels, 1/4 cup of the M&Ms, and flax seeds if using. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt together the butter, honey, peanut butter, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then simmer on medium-high for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
  • Pour the hot mixture over the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until everything is evenly coated and well combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and press firmly to pack it evenly across the bottom. When the mixture still has a little give, sprinkle the remaining M&Ms on top and press lightly to help them adhere.
  • Refrigerate the pan for 30 minutes for best consistency. Lift out the parchment, cut into bars, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
