You Are Loved and Enough: Stop Feeling You Have to Prove Yourself

God's Love

When I served as a Young Life College leader at the University of Michigan, I learned a lot from my staff leader, Tucker. He cared deeply for us and was especially encouraging when we were overwhelmed by school or personal struggles. In those moments Tucker often pointed us to Matthew 3:16–17, the passage that follows Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist.

It reads, “16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’”

What struck Tucker about this passage is that God declares His love and approval of Jesus even before Jesus has begun public ministry—before he preaches, heals, or ultimately gives his life. At that moment Jesus had not yet done any of the celebrated works we associate with him, and yet God was already pleased.

Tucker often reminded us that the way God sees Jesus is a window into how God sees each of us. We are not the unique Son in the way Jesus is, but we are children of God—beloved and accepted by him before we ever accomplish anything. God’s love is not earned by our deeds; it is given for who we are: his sons and daughters.

To drive this home, Tucker would close conversations with three simple sentences: “You are loved. You are enough. You don’t have to prove anything.” Do you hear those words? Do you feel them? You are loved by the Creator of the universe. You are enough in God’s sight, no matter how often you stumble. You don’t need to earn God’s acceptance—he already embraces you as you are.

When feelings of unworthiness creep in, repeat these truths aloud:

I am loved. I am enough. I don’t have to prove anything.

I hope these words resonate with you. They have brought me peace and comfort in difficult seasons, and I pray they do the same for you.
