Date-Sweetened Avocado Chocolate Mousse

It’s rare to find a dessert that feels indulgent yet is genuinely wholesome. This mousse delivers rich chocolate flavor while being naturally sweetened with a medjool date and creamy avocado. It’s easy to make in minutes and works well for an after-dinner treat or a healthy snack.

Why Avocado in Chocolate Mousse?

Avocado gives the mousse a luxuriously smooth texture and adds healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, and nutrients. When blended with melted dark chocolate, cocoa, and a soft date, the avocado flavor disappears into the background, leaving a silky, chocolatey dessert.

For the best results, use small to medium ripe avocados and blend thoroughly in a food processor or high-speed blender so there are no lumps. If you prefer a looser, pudding-like texture, add a little more milk.

This gluten-free, date-sweetened avocado chocolate mousse is quick and easy to prepare. It makes a decadent, yet good-for-you dessert and is a great way for kids to enjoy healthy fats in a sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 small to medium ripe avocados, pitted and peeled
  • 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate or chocolate chips (60-70%), chopped
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cacao or cocoa powder
  • 1/4–1/3 cup milk* (dairy, soy, or almond; sub half & half for creamier)
  • 1–2 tsp pure vanilla extract or vanilla paste
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt
  • 1 small soft medjool date**, pitted and broken into pieces
  • Fresh fruit for garnish, such as cherries

Instructions

  1. Microwave the chopped chocolate in 15-second bursts, stirring between intervals until mostly melted. Set aside to finish melting and cool slightly.
  2. In a food processor or high-speed blender, combine the avocados, melted chocolate, cacao powder, milk, medjool date, vanilla, and salt. Blend until completely smooth and creamy, with no visible avocado or date pieces. Add more milk if you prefer a looser, pudding-like texture.
  3. Serve immediately or chill. Refrigeration firms the mixture into a more mousse-like consistency. Top with fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

*Milk quantity controls texture—start with 1/4 cup and add more to reach your preferred consistency.

**If your medjool date is not soft, soak it in hot water for 15 minutes, then drain before using.

What Makes This Chocolate Mousse Healthy?

This mousse swaps refined sugar for a single medjool date and uses avocado for richness instead of heavy cream. Avocados provide heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, and vitamins, while dark chocolate and unsweetened cocoa contribute antioxidants. Choosing plant-based milk keeps it vegan-friendly, and the recipe is naturally gluten-free.
