What it’s like to visit Utah in April

Choosing the best time to visit Utah depends on what you want to do. April stands out because the weather is generally mild, spring blooms appear across lower elevations, and higher-elevation ski areas often still have snow. That combination makes it possible to enjoy both hiking and late-season skiing on the same trip.

Daytime temperatures in April are usually comfortable for outdoor exploration—warm enough for short sleeves or a light jacket, cool enough for longer hikes without overheating. On my mid-April trip I alternated between dresses with a jean jacket and leggings with a t-shirt and hoodie for hikes.

Some activities, like a hike and forest meditation with Park City Yoga on the Wasatch, can feel quite warm in the sun, while evenings generally call for a light jacket. If a spring rain moves through, nights can get chillier, especially in exposed areas or lodges tucked into mountain valleys.

Wide-open locations such as the Bonneville Salt Flats can be windy and noticeably cooler after sunset, but typical April conditions are very manageable with basic layers.

Is April a good time to visit Utah to ski?

Yes—April is a fine time for spring skiing. While snowpack begins to soften and melt at lower elevations, many well-known resorts remain open and offer spring-ski conditions. Resorts such as Deer Valley in Park City and Snowbasin in Ogden often operate into April, giving visitors the chance to ski in warmer, sunnier weather.

Spring skiing can be slushier when temperatures rise, but it’s a fun, different experience compared with winter powder. If you prefer not to ski, many mountain resorts still run gondolas, have scenic decks, and offer dining with views—so you can enjoy the alpine atmosphere without hitting the slopes.

Visiting Salt Lake City in Utah in April…

Salt Lake City sits at roughly 5,000 feet elevation and typically experiences a temperate April. Days range from cool to pleasantly warm, making it a great base for botanical gardens, museums, and nearby mountain activities.

Red Butte Garden is a highlight in April as bulbs and early-season blooms show color across the grounds. It’s a peaceful spot for a stroll, photography, or a picnic. The Natural History Museum of Utah is another strong option for visitors interested in geology, paleontology, and regional natural history.
