Our skin naturally produces oil, and some people have more active oil glands than others. Discovering shine hours after applying makeup can be frustrating, but the answer isn’t washing your face more often. Natural oils help protect the skin and can even delay the appearance of fine lines. Instead of over-cleansing, try these five practical makeup tips for oily skin to keep your look fresh and matte throughout the day.
1. Mattify
After cleansing, use a mattifying moisturizer to help regulate oil production and create a smooth base. Look for formulas that offer oil control and lightweight hydration. Some mattifying moisturizers also include SPF for daytime protection, and many are formulated to help reduce breakouts for acne-prone skin. A mattifier can extend a shine-free finish for several hours without drying the skin out.
2. Primer
Think of your face as a canvas: primer smooths texture, minimizes pores, and helps makeup adhere so it won’t slide or smudge during the day. Apply primer after moisturizing and before foundation. Choose an oil-free, pore-minimizing primer specifically designed for oily skin to help keep your makeup in place and maintain a matte finish for hours.
3. Choose Oil-Free or Long-Wear Makeup
Select foundations, concealers, and powders labeled oil-free, non-comedogenic, or long-wear. These formulations are less likely to contribute to excess shine and are designed to stay put on oily skin. If you’re acne-prone, stick to lightweight, oil-free moisturizers and foundations to keep pores clear. Matte-finish products help control shine without layering on heavy product.
4. Keep a Powder Handy
Carry a translucent powder for quick touch-ups, especially for the t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). A light dusting of powder over foundation mops up excess oil and restores a matte finish without caking. Translucent microfine powders work well because they set makeup without altering color. For a simple, natural alternative, cornstarch can be used sparingly as a temporary oil-absorbing powder when needed.
5. Use Blotting Papers
Blotting papers are an easy, pocket-sized solution to remove surface oil without disturbing makeup. Gently press a sheet to oily areas to absorb shine—no rubbing required. They’re discreet, effective, and show just how much oil the skin produces throughout the day. Keep a few packs in your bag for quick, mess-free touch-ups.
