Make these buckeye brownies when you don’t feel like rolling dozens of little peanut butter balls but still crave the classic chocolate-and-peanut-butter pairing. They’re easy to prepare and perfect for tailgating or any football-watching party.

Living in Ohio, being a fan of the Buckeyes seems almost required, and I enjoy cheering them on. I do have to admit my son favors Notre Dame and even wears blue and gold and green — which makes for some good-natured rivalry at home. He may mock the Buckeyes, but that didn’t stop him from going back for seconds of these brownies. Food brings people together, even when team loyalties differ.

Football season here is all about fun, snacks, and gathering around the big screen. While traditional buckeye candies are delicious, they can be time-consuming to make. When I discovered this buckeye brownie recipe, I loved that it captures the same flavors with far less effort. The result is rich, peanut-buttery, and chocolaty — a simple dessert that feels special.

Buckeye Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 box brownie mix (I used Ghirardelli)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 4 tbsp salted butter softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup chocolate chips (bittersweet recommended)
- 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
Instructions
-
Bake the brownies according to the package directions. Let them cool in the pan for about 30 minutes so they set enough to spread the filling.
-
In a bowl or stand mixer, beat 1/2 cup peanut butter with the softened butter. Gradually add the powdered sugar and beat until smooth. If the filling seems too loose, add up to 1/4 cup more powdered sugar to reach a spreadable consistency.
-
Spread the peanut butter filling evenly over the cooled brownies.
-
In a clean microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and the remaining 1/4 cup peanut butter. Microwave on high for one minute, stir, then continue in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted and smooth.
-
Pour the melted chocolate-peanut butter ganache over the filling and spread it evenly. Refrigerate the pan for about an hour to set. Slice into squares and serve.
